Farsons Group has recently announced its endorsement of the #WaterIsLife campaign, an initiative headed by MEP Thomas Bajada, Rapporteur on the European Parliament Strategy on Water Resilience.

The #WaterIsLife campaign is an educational initiative that reinforces the belief that water is a right not a privilege. The campaign addresses the several challenges imposed on this belief, bringing together stakeholders in the industry as well as citizens to work together for the common good.

Farsons Group’s commitment to water management

At Farsons Group, water management is ingrained in its operational culture, heightened by the strong awareness and knowledge that water is not only a main raw material for the production of its beverages but also a scarce resource, especially within the specific context of the Maltese Islands.

A shared responsibility

This belief is shared by employees at all levels. The Group strives to ensure and guarantee the efficient use of water in all its processes, while the recovery of water is a daily responsibility and forms part of the Group's water resource management programme.

Groundwater policy

Farsons does not extract groundwater from boreholes. This long-standing company policy supports our consideration for Malta's scarce natural water availability.

Thanks to the reliability and quality of municipal potable water, there is no operational need to tap into groundwater.

Water used in products

All water used in our finished products is sourced exclusively from potable water supplied by the Water Services Corporation. This is already compliant with applicable safety and quality standards. Before being used in our products the water undergoes extensive filtration, purification, and treatment to meet the strict product water specifications necessary to meet the Group's premium quality standards.

Water streams from RO systems

The company's reverse osmosis (RO) systems produce four distinct water streams:

  • Table water
  • Brewing water
  • Soft drinks water
  • Wash water

Breakdown of water usage

  • 99% of water used in our production processes comes directly from municipal sources.
  • 1% is recycled water sourced from our water capture and storage capabilities. This recycled water is typically used for equipment cleaning and maintenance.

Additional water is recovered through several processes including aluminium can and PET bottle rinsing and filtration.

Steam and condensate recovery

Farsons also recovers steam condensate generated during the heating processes across its production lines, ensuring efficient use of resources. This is in turn re-used to generate more steam.

Monitoring and improvements

Water consumption is measured and analysed on a weekly basis:

  • These metrics inform Key Performance Indicators for each production process.
  • A monthly Water Consumption Index is shared internally to track progress.

From Financial Year 2022 to Financial Year 2025, water usage per hectolitre dropped from 2.914 hl to 2.801 hl, a reduction of nearly 4%. This improvement is driven by ongoing water recovery initiatives including the reuse of rinse water, filtration streams, and steam condensate, highlighting Farsons’ continued commitment to water efficiency and continuous improvement.
